Who Was Coretta Scott King?

Coretta Scott King, together with her husband, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., had worked hard to support Human Rights. When Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in 1968, she could have retired from public office and devoted herself to raising her four children. Instead, Coretta Scott King carried on her husband's work, trying to fulfill his dream of an America in which all people had equal rights. Since that time she became a forceful public figure and an important leader in the civil rights movement.

About the Coretta Scott King
Children's Book Awards...

The Coretta Scott King Committee of the American Library Association's Ethnic Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table (EMIERT) presents the Coretta Scott King Book Award annually in January. The awards are given to African American authors and illustrators for outstandingly inspirational and educational contributions. The books promote understanding and appreciation of the culture of all peoples and their contribution to the realization of the American dream. They are designed to commemorate the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and to honor Mrs. Coretta Scott King for her courage and determination to continue the work for peace and world brotherhood.
